Conversa Phone Afrikaans
Published in Paperback by Conversa-Phone Inst (December, 1995)
Author: Conversa-Phone Institute
Average review score:

Good for pronounciation
This one-cassette system seems to be the "only game in town" regarding Afrikaans on tape. The audio portion is basic and to the point; the manual is very inexpensively printed containing Afrikaans and English phrases. There is no pronounciation guide; so one must listen very carefully to each phrase many times, but it does work.

The tape contains a male and a female voice saying each Afrikaans phrase just once. The subjects include dates, times, counting, colors, things to eat, restaurant items, etc.

I recommend it for someone, like myself, just beginning the study of this language but I am ordering a self-study book in order to get more depth.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design: Applications of Architectural Design and Space Management Concepts

Average review score:

A pedestrian approach to security design
This book has pretty low level info.

If you are looking for ways to secure a high level executive's office suite using the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, forget it. The examples in this book are more at the level of bus stops.

Hopefully the authors will update their information with modern design scenarios.

Darkmoon: Eighth Army Special Operations in the Korean War (Naval Institute Special Warfare Series)
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (November, 1995)
Author: Ed Evanhoe
Average review score:

Eighth Army Special Operations in the Korean War
This book, along with its companion in the series, "Raiders on the South China Coast" gives a lot of information about the history of the U.S. Army Special Forces in the Far East during the 1950's. Much of why we ended up so heavily involved in Vietnam can be better understand with the light of this information. The U.S. by the time of the Vietnam War occured had a long history of covertly fighting Communism in the Far East. In this book Mr. Evanhoe modestly says little about himself, but gives many details of the heroic behind the lines operations and sacrifices of these Korean, U.S., and British special forces personnel. He explains how personnel were selected, trained, and supportedly logistically... of the sacrifices and the costs that occured when they were actually conducted. He gives accounts of where the operations were based and these locations chosen. This is possible because Mr. Evanhoe is writing from the perspective from someone who has personal knowledge of conducting intelligence operations for several years while in the U.S. Army in the Far East. Even today, the U.S. military is still involved in the Korean Theater of Operations. This book gives useful information for someone to develop an informed perspective to make better foreign policy decisions there. Hopefully, the quality of the committment of those serving in this part of the world in the future for us and representing our interests will measure up to the glorious legacy of the people in this book.

I love books about decorating and making things pretty, not books about crafts. Most of the crafts in this book are too country and too laborious. Who has the time??!!

Dollars and Diplomacy: The Impact of U.S. Economic Initiatives on Arab-Israeli Negotiations (Policy Papers (Washington Institute for Near East Policy), No. 49.)
Published in Paperback by Washington Institute For Near East Policy (January, 1999)

Dollars and Diplomacy: The Impact of U.S. Economic
The U.S. government spends on the order of $5 billion a year in an effort to promote Arab-Israeli peace, not to speak of untold hours of diplomats' and politicians' time and many other exertions. Has all this effort paid off? Before replying, Clawson and Gold point out that the great majority of Middle Easterners disagree with the implied assumptions that lie behind the economic dimension of this effort (namely, that being better off makes it easier to make politically difficult decisions; and that economic cooperation probably will lead to political cooperation). Far from wanting their opponents to prosper, people in the region (quite instinctively) fear that more wealth will make them a more formidable enemy. Or, as the authors memorably put it (playing off of Shimon Peres's quip), Middle Easterners fear "banks as much as tanks."

Clawson and Gold cautiously endorse the American approach, calling efforts to build prosperity and regional cooperation "useful." In the same breath, however, they emphasize the need for "a sense of proportion" in what to expect of economic incentives. "In the Middle East, politics does come before business, but business can help to reinforce politics." If Americans keep in mind the obvious limitations of economics, cooperation in this realm can help promote prosperity and people-to-people contact, positive ends in their own right, even if they do not lead to grand diplomatic breakthroughs.

Although the authors offer a sophisticated and sensible critique of U.S. outlook and policy, it may be that, at least in the Middle East, the nasty gut instinct of the locals (kick your opponent when he's down) is ultimately more on target than the good-willed American approach (help him up, remake him). In any case, the years ahead will provide ample opportunity to discover who understands the region better.

The Economic Appraisal of Natural Gas Projects (Oxford Institute for Energy Studies)
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr (January, 1999)
Authors: Willem Van Groenendaal, Willem J.H. Van Gronendaal, and Willem Van Groenendal
Average review score:

A highly technical approach to the appraisal of projects
This is probably a good book for in depth theoretical approach to analyzing gas projects, but as a financial analyst that has modeled power plants and pipelines, this book did not supplement my appraisal skills, however misleading the title may be.

It is filled with formulas and complex theory that business people really dont need to know. I think that this book may be helpful for engineers, or academics, but is too detailed to be of use to the asset developer looking for good ways to appraise or financially model a pipeline project.

In short THIS IS NOT LEISURE READING MATERIAL, it does not flow from one paragraph to the other, and is jampacked with technical references that will make you pull your hair out.

I rated this three stars because I am sure that somebody will find the technical Blitzkrieg of the author useful, but it wont be financial analysts or business developers.

Economic Freedom of the World: 1975-1995

Authors: James D. Gwartney, Robert Lawson, Walter Block, and B.C.) Fraser Institute (Vancouver
Average review score:

Valuable reference source: good data
The written part of this book is not terribly interesting, but the data, which occupy the bulk of its pages are on very interesting topics and appear to be very carefully put together. Their summary indices should be ignored since they seem to be derived in some ad hoc fashion rather than by factor analysis or other systematic index construction technique. I expect to be using the material in multi-level analyses on a variety of topics. It is a book to dip into again and again. Ideally, it should come with a cd-rom presenting the data in some readily searchable format. Perhaps in the next edition?

The Eisenstein Reader
Published in Paperback by British Film Inst (December, 1998)
Authors: Richard Taylor, Richard Taylor, Sergei Eisenstein, British Film Institute, and Colin Maccabe
Average review score:

Eisenstein In His Own Words
This book is a compilation of what Richard Taylor considers to be Eisenstiein's most important and relevant writing, not only on film but also on Russian history, politics, and Eisenstein's eclectic influences. While I think the book is very well put together, Eisenstein's writing itself can be esoteric and hard for the reader to decipher. However, if you can get past Eisenstein's puzzling language, you can glean a great deal of valuable insight into the work of a man who has been called one of the most influential directors of all time. I was most interested in Eisenstein's writings on other art forms that informed his film making, particularly Kabuki theatre and Japanese Haiku. However, if this is your first time reading about Soviet cinema, I would recommend starting with some of Taylor's other works such as The Film Factory or Inside the Film Factory.
